I stumbled upon Arlington Miami in front of the Bayfront Amphitheater this past Sunday afternoon on my way to Bayside Marketplace from the College/Bayside station of the Metromover.

It made me stop.

In a city sorely lacking in art in public places (unless you count the roosters on Calle Ocho), I found Arlington Miami to be quite refreshing. It made me uncomfortable, piqued my curiosity, provoked thought and put things in perspective all in a span of 20 seconds. Best of all, it was there for all to see. For free.

My salute to all the soldiers that have carried and continue to carry the weight of the stars and stripes on their broad shoulders. Thank you.

My condolences to the families dealing with the loss of a fallen hero.

It’s here again.

That time of year when it’s 106° in the shade (while sipping on a granizado with a cool water-soaked towel draped around your neck, of course). That time of year when stepping outside feels like you just stepped inside the Volcanic Rock Sauna at Neo Vertika (what a crock of sh*t that was). That time of year when you can look any female straight in the eye and unabashedly ask: “Damn mama, you having a bad hair day?”.

The hottest summer in a hundred years?

So hot it won’t bother getting up in 2008.

“Is this some kind of bulletin? Last I checked, Miami was still 1,814 miles north of the equator. It is hotter than dog sh*t in a skillet today and it’ll be hotter than all the weave I saw at South Beach last night tomorrow. As a matter of fact, it’s been hot every summer since the first Tequesta set foot on this piece of swamp”.

I usually don’t mind the heat. I really don’t. It’s not like I mind showing property on a Friday afternoon when it’s 92°, the humidity is 80% and the most prominent feature in our solar system is baking me like some Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie . It’s not like I mind exiting my car and sporting a damp long-sleeve button-down stuck to the middle of my back either.

What I do mind is that local media headlines lately read more like “Man Shot for Material Goods On Way Home to Family After a Hard Day’s Night at Work” and less “Man Helps Blind Lady Cross Street While Carrying Groceries With Teeth”.

HEaT + Low Currency in Circulation = Increased Crime Rate?

Anybody out there know if we got some local criminologists treating these as “mutually inclusive”? I can’t make any conclusions without empirical data. Sorry.

It’s gonna be an interesting summer. Will IT be televised?

For creating music for the rest of us (that doesn’t come across as elitist, does it?).

For earning your money.

For making this the best show I’ve ever experienced. I said it.

For inspiring people to wake up in the morning feeling passionate about who they are, what they do and how they live.

PINOCHET, I think Cris is right. These guys are aliens.

Remember when Coldplay rocked the same amphitheater about 2 1/2 years ago? No knock on Chris Martin and cohorts (I like them a lot), but that was only a performance. RADIOhEAD is spiritual cleansing. They make it OK to miss mass on Sunday. Father Alberto (dude’s got his own bilingual webpage - the Archdiocese figured it out man) understands.

Parents, school is almost out. Do not, I repeat, do not send your kids to summer school this year. Don’t waste your money on the tutoring thing either. Go out and buy The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, Hail to the Thief and In Rainbows (Pablo Honey and Amnesiac are extra credit). Create a comfortable environment (dim the lights, light some candles, clean your house) and play those albums, start to finish, in the same order, over and over and over again.
