News of the Different – Easy, Rider

July 31, 2008 · 3 Comments

When Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper created Wyatt and Billy in 1969, they never thought they’d have so much influence over American counterculture. Nearly 40 years later, their influence remains undimmed.

I’m not sure if these two were on their way out of Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery fresh from an LSD binge on their way to Mardi Gras or if they were keeping it local and heading to Calle Ocho. Nevertheless, can anyone explain the Barbie doll posse hanging on for dear life?

Should we ask to check the gas tank?

I can’t quite put my finger on this one.

This photograph was taken by one of our loyal readers. It was shot near the Central Business District on the street that serves as the baseline that divides all the streets on the Miami-Dade County grid plan from north and south. Thanks for sharing, Jorge. You are a true public servant…wink, wink.

Eyesore of the Month – Lincoln Marti

July 3, 2008 · 13 Comments

Who overfed Rainbow Brite and unleashed her on this corner?

This building, located on the southwest corner of one of the busiest and most visible intersections in Miami (SW 8 ST & SW 27 AVE), is home to one of several branches of Lincoln Marti Schools in Miami-Dade County.

Interlude: You may recall that Lincoln Marti is the same school attended by the poster child for all political pawns – the indelible Elian Gonzalez aka Eliansito. Elian was not only fortunate enough to have been treated to Cheeseburger Happy Meals, a visit to Walt Disney World, and a black Labrador puppy courtesy of United States Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart, he was also afforded the opportunity to partake in the Cuban Heritage Program at Lincoln Marti, a program”especially developed to strengthen the Cuban roots of those children born in the United States of Cuban ancestry as well as bridge a deeper understanding among those American and Latin American students who care to know about the history of a country that even though small in size has had an enormous influence in the history of the United States and the world.

Ladies and gentlemen, children – the ones a sober pre-Bobby Whitney Houston once believed were our future – attend class in a structure with windows and doors purposely “blacked out” with bright reds, blues, yellows and greens. That means no sunshine. That means no view. That means staring at la ticher and the chalkboard – that’s it – for a minimum of 6 hours a day.

Not only are Whitney’s children forced to “learn” in this environment everyday, but thousands upon thousands of pedestrians and motorists alike are forced to witness this on a daily basis as well.

I turn to you, my readers, for ideas on what we can do to improve the quality of life of innocent children and the not-so-innocent adults who allow them to inhabit an environment as such.

The comments section is now open. Please chat amongst yourselves.

Feel free to visit Lincoln Marti online, a one-stop shop where you can learn about the school’s curriculum, see pictures of Elian’s School, pick up “El Album de Elian” in their online store, and purchase mamey/sapote by the pound. While you’re there, don’t forget to make a donation using your very own PayPal account.
